Praise the Lord, everyone.
This month, the Wellness Ministry is focusing on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in children. ADHD used to be known as ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder).
Symptoms of ADHD include inattentiveness, impulsive behavior, and hyperactive behavior. This is a brain and mental disorder that 60% of children have, most will this into adulthood. But there are cases where children outgrow ADHD.
Saints of God, when you notice your child doing something of the blue or doing things suddenly with no notice. Maybe your child is displaying signs of having difficulties paying attention to you or what’s going on around them. Maybe your child getting impulsive without warning. It’s time to take notice, especially when you know this behavior is not the way a child is supposed to act. This issue can interfere with school and home life. It is also more common in boys.
Here are some things to look for in children who may have ADHD:
  • Easily distracted
  • Doesn’t finish tasks or follow directions
  • Appears not to listen
  • Makes careless mistakes
  • Problems organizing
  • Constantly losing things
  • Having a hard time in school
  • Hyperactive behavior / always “on the go”
  • Can’t sit still
  • Climbing things
  • Running constantly
  • Doesn’t play quietly
  • Impulsive behavior
  • Trouble waiting their turn for something
  • Will interrupt others
When you see some of these things in your child, it’s time to get a proper diagnosis from your pediatrician. Get a full exam, including hearing and vision if this has been constantly going on for six months or more. Testing done on children usually begins between the ages of five and six. If medication is advised, please do your research, ask questions, and know the facts before you commit. Some of the medicines prescribed can do more harm than good. It’s important to get the best care and medicine for your child.
Stay in touch with your doctor. The more you know about the illness and how to treat it, the better chances your child has to living a healthy and blessed life.
Be blessed
